My master’s thesis was conceived during a research project that I initiated with UPM (the frontrunner of the new forest industry and a big timber manufacturer in Finland) and the Tampere University of Technology. The aim of the research was to study the architectural potential of the recent post-formable plywood product by UPM called ”Grada”.
The thesis work is divided into three parts that present design examples and physical tests exploring possible solution principles and their architectural applications. The main design project part in the thesis is a Spa and Conference Center in Levi, Finland. Grada is used in this free-shaped building design as concrete mold and as interior panel.
The building is located in Levi’s Koutalaki in a beautiful setting that justifies an organic shape. The building respects the surrounding contours, partly becoming a part of the landscape, partly enhancing its drama. Functionally the building completes the Levi conference entity currently consisting of the conference center Summit and the Hotel Levi Panorama. The project was awarded the Wuorio prize nomination.
